Basically I’m deeply freaked out by things that mimic people, but there’s something uncanny or off that tips of the main character that they’re not human or something is wrong. Anything that steals bodies or shapeshifts or mimics voices, doppelgängers, demons, etc.
Would love if this theme carries throughout the book and is not just one scene. Thanks!

_The Nightmare People_ by Lawrence Watt-Evans
Following
The Outsider by Stephen King the guy kept somehow taking on the appearance of other characters. It was really creepy.
If middle grade is okay – Tales from Cabin 23: The Boo-Hag Flex. About a Gullah creature that steals and wears the skins of humans.
Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for because the double isn’t an antagonistic force, but spiritual doubles play a significant role in The Fetch by Chris Humphreys (YA horror.)
cuckoo by gretchen felker-martin!!! exactly this
IT by Stephen King.
He calls it glamour but it’s essentially the same thing, the ‘big bad’ in the book can shape shift and become anything – especially the thing the protagonists fear most.
1. The Thing – Alan D Foster
2. Annihilation – Jeff Vandermeer
