Any recs on a true crime book that's not exploitative and treats the victims with respect? It'a a bit icky when books inadvertedly glorify the killers or disregard the victims' point of view.
Murdered by Mumia is controversial, but was cowritten by the wife of the murdered police officer.

I would recommend the five: the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the ripper.

You might be interested in memoirs of survivors. I will say I haven’t read a lot of these so if there’s still controversies, I’m not aware but the first one that comes to mind is Jaycee Dugard’s A Stolen Life. Coming straight from the victims should avoid a lot of the problems you are concerned about; in this case with Stockholm syndrome specifically I’m not sure.
Last year I read 3 books about Chris McCandless and I enjoyed the project so much. Of course I started with Into the Wild, then I read his sister’s A Wild Truth. Finally I read a fiction book called A Good Enough Mother in which the MC’s son idolized Chris. Maybe you’d enjoy this collection too.
