Looking for something to teach me about the structure and history of small governing groups like tribes and clans.

I have a feeling everything I learnt about tribal groups is going to be very anglicised and filled with stereotypes. I'm interested in their general history, internal and external politics and different cultural practices these groups generated. I'm particularly interested in non-European groups.
