Romance has never been my favorite genre, but I've been bummed out by a few recent books assigned by book clubs that were very cheesy with horribly toxic pairings. I'm looking for a book that might change my opinion on the genre. I'd be looking for something with the following features:
- Well written slow burn.
- Doesn't rely entirely on cliches and tropes. Dialogue is not cheesy or cringey.
- Mature adult characters that act and respond like adult women and not middle schoolers.
- No "butch is the protector, femme is helpless damsel" trope. Does not have to be butch/femme at all, but especially don't want the aforementioned dynamic.
- Can have any genre crossover (sci-fi, fantasy, etc)
- Good sex scenes are a plus
Looking forward to your suggestions. The biggest thing is wanting to read a book where characters act like mature adults. If your favorite sapphic romance doesn't fit all the above criteria, I'd still be interested to hear about it.
Thanks!
