I have a friend who has been facing some creative blocks during the last quarter of the year and was dropped from some gigs. The experience has been discouraging for him, to say the least. Thinking of adding a book as part of his Christmas gift to cheer him on.
Have looked up on Reddit and also my nearest Barnes & Noble this week, considering to either get him:
- The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin OR
- The Music Lesson: A Spiritual Search for Growth Through Music by Victor Wooten
Read through 'The Creative Act' briefly and rather liked it, but reviews on Goodreads have called it out for being a little superficial? Saw some recommendations for 'The Music Lesson' on music-related Reddit threads but wasn't able to find it at the bookstore. Has anyone read it before, is it good?
Open to any other recommendations! Books that aren't too preachy or 'airy fairy', and would help lift his spirits and encourage him to keep going.

Both excellent choices.
12 notes by Quincy Jones is an excellent book for a musician.
