As 2024 draws to an end, I can’t help but notice my TBR pile looks pretty much the same as it did at the start of the year, with the same books still waiting to be picked up. Although I’ve done fairly well not to add to the pile, I have failed miserably at reading in general this year.

I’ve been an on and off reader for years – sometimes I find myself getting lost in a book and unable to put it down, finishing it in just a few days, whereas other times it’s taking me months to read a few chapters. This is partly due to life and just having no time/other priorities, but I also don’t feel motivated enough to read when I do have spare time.

Each year I make a New Year’s resolution to read X amount of books, and each year I never accomplish it. This year I’m going to be realistic and set myself a goal to read just 5 books throughout the whole year.

Are there any general tips or advice you can share that will help me focus and prioritise reading in my spare time, or help create a routine to incorporate into my day-to-day?

    Any suggestions are welcome!

Put your phone down, generally. So many people just reflexively pick up their phone and start scrolling and it’s a terrible habit. Take a book with you in your car so if you have a few minutes of downtime (waiting to pick up kids from school, waiting for appointments, etc) you can read instead of scroll.

I also don’t watch tv except for sports, so I read when most people are watching.

    2. Read books you want to read not ones that you think you *should* read. And get rid of your devices.
