Hi all, sadly my mother's funeral was last week. I'm OK but feeling a bit aimless. Spent the last few hours surfing the internet aimlessly. Would appreciate some book recommendations. They can be about loss, or entirely different themes to distract myself.
I don't think I've posted on this SubReddit before but have lurked and enjoyed some random recommendations like 'Several People are Typing' which I read in one sitting and found very funny as an office-based worker.
I tend to alternate between classic novels and sci-fi, but am open to other genres. I recently enjoyed the Crying of Lot 49 and Lolita, and am currently (appropriately for my username) reading 'A Stitch in Time', a Star Trek DS9 novel.
I also like history. I am on and off listening to the LBJ books by Robert Caro on audiobook, and enjoy his lengthy digressions about the Texas hill country and the New Deal. I live in a small town in Ireland, but will read books from/about anywhere.
Thanks.

Patti Smith’s Just Kids was a big help to me when my mom died. It’s all about art and youthful exuberance and loss.
I’m so sorry for your loss. It may seem a bit of an odd rec but I’d suggest Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir. On the surface it seems like it would just be a good distraction, but if you get into the series there are strong themes of grief and loss. The books are very engaging puzzles that reward reading closely and rereads. If you don’t have the brain space for something like that right now, that would be totally understandable. I got into this series maybe 8 months ish after the loss of someone close to me.
Just wanna say sorry for your loss!!
