A book from madieval times in which characters think strategically harm one another to seize the throne? kinda like chess

Doesn't necessarily have to be about the throne but I'm looking for the type of novel where there are smart characters pulling big brain moves on one another, conspiracy, wars, assassinations etc. Kinda like game of thrones.
