I have $700 to exclusively spend on books – what should I get?
I have a budget at work that resets on Jan. 1, and I found out I can use it to buy books. 😱
If you had this much to spend, what would you buy to have in your collection forever?
I actually don’t want suggestions based on the books I like because I want to think outside of my own personal preferences. I don’t usually buy books and always check them out at the library.
The top 5 books I own and have kept for 20+ years are:
- Beloved by Toni Morrison
- The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
- Atonement by Ian McEwan
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
- East of Eden by John Steinbeck

What languages do you read?
Ursula k le guin the left hand of darkness
Are you buying them for your team? I’d maybe ask them for suggestions about what they’d want!
I really recommend The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. It’s the “memoir” of a burn victim who falls in love with a mental patient who thinks they were a couple in Medieval Germany.
You could also try something by Haruki Murakami. Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, 1Q84, and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle are my favorites.
Is there a language you’ve been meaning to learn? Textbooks can be pretty expensive so this is a great chance to pick up some sets for beginners!
Can you buy used / on EBay? If so check out the First Edition Library, they reprinted first edition facsimiles of great books like these.
Also Folio Society!
