Literary fiction that is tender, introspective and ultimately optimistic

Looking for a book for a friend. She loves literary fiction, and especially those that are emotionally evocative. She loves a good tale of redemption and prefers books that ultimately take an optimistic view of humans, even where our flaws are central to the story. There can be heartbreak and loss, but she generally steers clear of books with extreme violence or abuse.
