Hey, we have started reading chapter books to my four year old before bed. Throughout the day we read just regular picture books, but before bed it’s a chapter book or he’s obsessed with the Eyewitness books. So we are going to go back and forth between chapter books and those. If you have read chapter books to any of your younger kiddos do you have any recommendations? Right now he’s loving The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

My 4 year old reads Dr. Seuess and this has gone well. He recognizes rythming words. He has also tried the Paddington bear book, but this failed.
Mercy Watson
Last of the really great Whangdoodles
Adventures with the secret explorers. There’s a bunch of books in that series. My son absolutely loved them. You follow a group of kids who go on adventures and learn about science. Fantastic series.
I read Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White to my littles. Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox was a favourite too.
My 4yo has enjoyed all of these:
By Kate Dicamillo: Mercy Watson (pretty short chapter books), Tales from Deckawoo Drive (same characters as Mercy Watson but longer chapter books), Flora and Ulysses, Tales of Desperaux (we’ve started but aren’t very far yet).
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon
The Geronimo Stilton books are a great introduction to chapter books. Lots visually to look at for a younger reader like yours, great stories and very little kid friendly. Just avoid the “spookier” stories.
I would suggest anything by Roald Dahl is simply amazing and interesting! Right now, there’s also David Walliams, his writing is similar to that of RD’s.
For four year olds, definitely short stories work well too!
