I'm looking for a book recommendation for a somewhat unique reason. I enjoy creating characters for the fandoms I'm part of, and recently, I discovered Limbus Company. Many of the sinners in the game are inspired by well-known literary figures like Dante from Dante's Inferno, Faust, Meursault, Don Quixote, and others.
This leads me to my request: I'm searching for books, ideally ones that aren't very recent and are of Japanese origin (although, the latter isn't as important), that feature a character who outwardly appears confident, self-assured, and capable, yet internally struggles with profound insecurity, a sense of helplessness, and a deep fear of death or failure. These traits align with a character concept I’ve been working on, so I’m hoping for some fitting suggestions.
Additionally, I’m open to exploring classic Japanese literature as well, since I’d like to delve further into those kinds of books. Any must read recommendations like this would also be greatly appreciated!
