i like delving into meaningful relationships or themes, commentary on politics or specific aspects of culture and whatnot, but i don’t want it to go too heavy or too deep to be emotionally exhausting or triggering. for example i’d be fine with something talking about rape culture, but would be too uncomfortable reading about depictions of rape or sa.

i’m okay with various subgenres, if it’s slice of life or speculative in any way. just trying to delve into more literary fiction and unsure where to start.

Here are a few our book club enjoyed (they like this type of fiction as well):

      The Namesake by Jumpha Lahiri

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain

People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (the groups was pretty split on this one-either loved or hated it-I loved it)

Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. It does have some emotional stuff but it is really beautiful and light-hearted too!!!

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka fit this brief for me. It’s a satire/black comedy about the Sri Lankan civil war, and a bit about being gay in Sri Lanka in the 80s, with enough humor throughout to keep it from becoming bleak.
