I’ve not read The Story of Civilization, but Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind was a great read and is a book I still think about years later.

Anything by Rose George, Judy Melinek, Caitlin Doughty, or Mary Roach. All very interesting, about subjects you never considered.

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson

I thought the Durant books were excellent. Great for broad overviews. Considered middlebrow at the time, mostly because they were so popular.
For 20th C world history check Modern Times by Paul Johnson.
For a masters degree in history/music/literature/art get From Dawn to Decadence by Jacques Barzun. Covers 1500-present. Superb writing, very rich content.
