“is it a man, a ghost, or my imagination?”

please suggest me a book where the narrator and/or audience are unsure if another character is living or dead, real or not real. i put "man" but it can be a woman or child or hell even an animal.

i would prefer if horror isn't the main genre but if you have one that's so good you do badly want to recommend it, go ahead!
