Hi all,
I'd love a good book where we spend time in the head of a character who battles with a poor perception of their appearance.
Ideally, feeling like you can't and are not allowed to be pretty/beautiful but wanting to overcome it.
What I don't want to see is very unusual physical traits that the character struggles to accept or miraculous makeovers. Not body neutrality either – I need the acknowledgement that it can matter.
Basically looking for an insight into a mediocre looking character learning to reconcile their interest in being beautiful with what they are.
Thanks!

Pretties by Scott Westerfield.
Don’t watch the film, it’s rubbish but the book is great. And there’s a sequel called Uglies
Memoir – I’m glad my mom died
The Color Purple. Celie is described as being plain and stocky, especially compared to her pretty sister. It matters to her a little, but she’s not fixated on it. Her whole life has been spent with people tearing her down. Most of the book is about her accepting herself in all aspects–mind, sexuality, appearance, interests, and agency. It’s a beautiful book.
You saying you’d unironically read my life story? I should write a book…
