I figured I'm terrible at reading entire novels all the way through, but intriguing short stories I can do.
I'm open to any genre (maybe not horror) just books that have collections of short stories that can be read completely on their own without needing knowledge of the authors' previous works or something.
Something equivalent that could be read aloud within a couple hours or so

Off the top of my head…
Ian McEwan: First Love, Last Rites
Ingvild Rishøi: Winter Stories (She has another one great collection of short stories, but I think only this one was translated to English)
and maybe something older:
Tales by Edgar A. Poe?
Odessa Stories by Isaac Babel?
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu
The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw
What It Means When A Man Falls From The Sky by Leslie Nneka Arimah
Now You Know It All by Joanna Pearson
