Hi, I am looking for well written fantasy with a good fantastical plot.

I really enjoyed Brandon Sanderson, but while his plots are great, his writing is horrifically bad.
I really loved Patrick Rothfuss (or I used to) but he never finished his series.

What I really dislike are books that are information dumps or tell you every part of their incredibly complicated magic system , or books that are romances masquerading as fantasy.

I love Name of the Wind too, I’ve seen The Lies of Locke Lamora come up frequently in suggestions like it. On my tbr so I can’t vouch for it yet, but mark it as a possibility!

Perdido Street Station and the other New Crobuzon Trilogy books by China Mieville. I think it’s safe to say they fall into into the fantasy genre, but they are on the dystopian steampunk side rather than dragons and unicorns high fantasy. Also, Kraken by the same author, about a hidden magical side of London.

    3. Lies of Locke Lamora has a great plot, The Tainted Cup is fantasy Sherlock with amazing world building. Naomi Noviks Schoolmance is great. And if you want something off kilter check out Dungeon Crawler Carl.

      Sure, I’ve got a few.

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett is a murder mystery wrapped in a unique fantasy setting. Bit Sherlock/Watson, very minimal romance (like one or two very brief scenes about it.) Book two is out this April.

The City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Really neat story told from multiple POVs. Tone is a bit tongue in cheek but not so much so I’d call it parody. Some really cool concepts in this one that stick with me.

Ursula K LeGuin’s “A Wizard of Earthsea” is what you’re looking for. Her writing is profound, concise, and beautiful, and her worldbuilding is imaginative and fantastical. It’s one of the greatest fantasy series ever written and criminally under appreciated.

    6. I really enjoyed Battle Mage by Peter A Flannery. He also just put put book two Aquila.

If you have Kindle Unlimited they are part of that. And Battle Mage has a great audiobook as well.
