Books with themes of ambition, hubris, and asking if one can, not if one should

Hi all! I'm looking for books with characters whose hunger for knowledge and/or power reaches too far. Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut is a great example. Bonus points for scifi/fantasy, for dire consequences for the character and the world, and extra bonus points for wizards and/or scientists!
