I write for a publication that covers immersive entertainment, which is typically (but not exclusively) nontraditional theater where guests roam and interact with performers in some way. We also cover VR, box experiences, etc.
I am looking for novels that would appeal to this community—books that are “immersive” in the sense that they play tricks on you, that they have some kind of gimmick or special effect.
Something akin to Blake Crouch’s novel Recursion, which deals with scientific manipulation of memories and time and actually makes you feel the effect by reprinting a chapter that you’ve already read. It starts out exactly the same (but ends differently) and when I read the book, I had to flip back to confirm I wasn’t crazy and had in fact already read those words before.
Other books I haven’t read but I believe are in this category:
– Ship of Theseus by J.J. Abrams
– Cain’s Jawbone by E. Powys Mathers
– House of Leaves by Mark Danielwski
– Gnomon by Nick Harkaway
– The 7 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
Choose Your Own Adventure books also come to mind as falling into this category.
