Looking for a book about foods created because of war. For example it’s my understanding that M&Ms were created for soldiers because they had a higher melting point. I’m curious what other foods were created as a result of war.
I have a cookbook called “Civil War Recipes” by Lisa May Spaulding and John Spaulding that talks about the food shortages soldiers and civilians faced, although the recipes themselves were mainly for the home front. It does tell you how to make things like ashcakes or hardtack pudding though, which soldiers would’ve eaten.

I recommend Combat-Ready Kitchen: How the U.S. Military Shapes the Way You Eat.
