Posted last year about post apocalyptic book suggestions after having read "One Second After" by William Forstchen. One of the suggestions then as well as other threads I've seen asking the same thing was "Earth Abides" by George Stewart. Earlier this year I saw that Apple+ was planning a TV series on it that gave me the motivation to finally read it. I liked it but felt it was a little dated seeing that it was written during the 1950s but it was still a good story.
Just finished watching watching the final episode of the TV series and not quite sure how I feel about it. I mean, yes they had to make it set in present day after COVID and all to make it appease today's crowd but I think some of the other changes were unneeded but then again, to make it all fit into 6×42 minute episodes I guess I can understand.
One thing that really irked me in the TV show seemed to go against most of the written material. in the book there is very little if any mention of religion at all. Basically Ish always just saying his family was not religious and he was always vague on it all. I just his only "faith" was faith in the human race to try to survive.
I think all of the rest of the changes made sense except to have to bring that in. The ending wrapped up very quickly – none of the later years really represented in the TV show except Ish finally handing off his Hammer – in the book I don't think he was quite aware of who he was handing it off to (i think there were a couple more generations involved in the book, where the TV show it was his grand son.
