i've been desperately searching for The Perfect Book that will scratch this oddly specific itch and i could really use some help. [gestures toward the title]. i love the idea of transhumanism, especially as support for disabilities. not in a "i want to transcend my human body" way, but in a "my quality of life is significantly impacted by whether or not i have these augments" way.

the only things i know that really scratched this itch were the deus ex games (human revolution and mankind divided, never played the original), and robocop. the mc's are both near-fatally injured and receive their augments in order to save their lives (yes, im violently generalizing here). i found those stories incredibly compelling and i'd love to find something similar. ive gone to book stores but havent really found much that caught my attention.

i'd prefer for there to be no space travel. like i said, this is an oddly specifc craving i'm having skhskkd. also, please nothing similar to altered carbon. i could not stand the protagonist and there was so much misogyny that i had to get that book out of my house asap. just… no. im someone who prioritizes characters over plot, so i need a protagonist who is compelling and well-written. no bland cardboard cutouts onto which we project ourselves, please! im also realizing that cops seem to be a common theme here – absolutely not necessary for me. my two must-haves are 1) mc with augments that they get out of necessity/to support their disability and 2) character depth.

in the words of the wonderful sabrina carpenter, please please please 🥺🙏 thanks in advance!!
