I'm going through a very rough postpartum period and I really look forward to the part of the night where my baby is finally asleep and I can read a bit of a novel before I sleep.
I have had terrible postpartum insomnia so I can't handle anything super exciting, or content that is triggering/very depressing (so no suicide, dying children or mothers of children dying, please). But I also don't want to feel like I'm reading total fluff or a saccharine self-help type narrative.
Books I've enjoyed in this period so far include Friends and Strangers (this bordered on fluffy but I enjoyed the early motherhood theme), Little Fires Everywhere, The Bean Trees, and Phillip Pullman's Book of Dust series.
