    1. I’m not saying these left me in “awe” but they were definitely reads that tickled my mind: Bunny by Mona Awad and A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. I recommend reading A Clockwork Orange without a glossary handy as that’s part of what made the reading experience so profound for me (by the end I realized my brain had already learned his slang language and it was what made it so interesting to me..perhaps awesome).

Take it back to the classics and get a new appreciation for the craft with these titles:

The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells (sci-fi horror from the 19th century, novella that often comes in anthologies as a bonus).

The Chronicles of Prydain (5-part book fantasy series by Lloyd Alexander. Meant for kids, but is a solid work of Welsh inspired adventure. The fifth and final book won the Newbury Medal. Early 1960’s).

The Haunted Hotel by Wilkie Collins (Wilkie is the progenitor of modern mysteries, and his horror is just as good. 19th century.)

The Color from Outer Spacs by H.P. Lovecraft (He has a cult following for a reason! Early 20th).

    3. Dungeon Crawler Carl. Has some fantasy and horror type elements to it. Very funny and well written. First series to pull me in right away since I read GoT back in the day. The characters are all well written and there are 7 books (with more on the way) to read through. I was on pace to read 60 books in 2024 until I came across this series. Ended up reading the series 3 times consecutively before forcing myself to find other books to read.

{{Gil’s All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez.}} (Hey, I haven’t rec’ed this one in a while!) It won’t leave you in awe, but it might leave you laughing!

    5. IMAJICA by Clive Barker. An artist that resets his life every ten years or so and a shape shifting assassin travel across multiple worlds where they fall in love and discover that the artist may be the most powerful magician ever born.

It is an epic blend of dark fantasy and outright horror.

    6. I found a deep appreciation for Kazuo Ishiguro this past year! Never Let Me Go and Klara & the Sun really had me thinking. His writing is beautiful and so are the themes.

    7. Fevre Dream by George RR Martin was a great vampire book set on the steam ships of 1800s USA.
