SFF – why is every goodreads rec just booktok trash these days

i love contemporary sci-fi/fantasy, especially books with political intrigue or books that are pushing boundaries. some of my faves include:

• the space between worlds by micaiah johnson
• the spear cuts through water by simon jimenez
• the past is red by catherynne m. valente
• the light pirate by lily brooks-dalton
• piranesi by susanna clarke

if i could distill these down into criteria it would be:
– beautiful prose
– political intrigue
– a protagonist i’d follow anywhere

does anyone have any books that match this? i feel like goodreads just throws booktok slop at me these days and i’m really struggling to find anything that catches my attention
