I’ve hit a bit of a dry spell with fantasy novels. I’m obsessed with everything by Naomi Novik, and most things by Heather Fawcett, Octavia Butler, and Ursula LeGuin. I also really have enjoyed Ink Blood Sister Scribe and She Who Became The Sun, and some but not all of Nghi Vo and T Kingfisher’s work.

I like fantasy novels with good world building and character growth, that explore the human condition but aren’t pessimistic.

I’ve been recommended stuff by N K Jemison, R F Kuang, T J Klune, and Samantha Shannon, but largely haven’t found what I was looking for!

    Any ideas ?

Diana Wynne Jones is brilliant at writing characters with rich inner lives. Check out Howl’s Moving Castle and Dalemark.

You may also like the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett, it’s a gorgeous series that celebrates being compassionate and upholding justice.

    2. *Lyonesse Trilogy*, by Jack Vance

*Riddle-Master Trilogy*, by Patricia A. McKillip

*The Curse of Chalion Series*, by Lois McMaster Bujold

*The Wheel of Time*, by Robert Jordan (books 1-11) and Brandon Sanderson (books 12-14)

*Bridge of Birds*, by Barry Hughart

*The Discworld Series*, by Terry Pratchett (note that the first ten books are uneven, so you can read books 4, 6, and 8 and then skip to 11-42 if you like)
