I like to learn from books but also like it to be a good story.
History books can be great so any suggestions for History would also be appreciated.
I'm not only interested in history though.

Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis. They’re books about agents in a time travel organization sent back to the London Blitz. It was a great story with endearing characters, but also a fascinating study of everyday life during wartime.
Shogun and Tai Pan by James Clavell is exactly what you are looking for
The Women by Kristin Hannah. It’s about women in the Vietnam war. I also liked The Four Winds by her as well. It’s about the Dust Bowl.
The Flashman series by George Macdonald Fraser. Wild, unbelievable stories following an anti-hero all over the world during Victorian times. Delightful reads. The backgrounds are actual events.
The Masters of Rome novels by Colleen McCullough. They cover the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. Thoroughly researched.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. The book alternates between the 1940s and the present day, and features both fictional and nonfictional characters. It’s a techno-thriller about cryptography and the intersection of math and computer science.
The Pillars of The Earth – the author was really into medieval architecture, which was what actually kickstarted the whole series.
