A book as good as The Stand but modern depictions of women
I’m loving The Stand but its depictions of women are a bit dated and hard to just ignore. Is there a more modern post-apocalyptic novel similar to The Stand?
Ling Ma’s Severance is a great apocalyptic read with a very modern female protagonist. Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake series is another one that comes to mind!

Much more grounded and different in tone, but if you want a post-pandemic-apocalypse book with good female characters, you can’t go wrong with **Station Eleven** by Emily St. John Mandel.

Try Octavia Butler’s *Parable of the Sower* and *Parable of the Talents*. You’ve made me think, however, in an apocalyptic scenario, will brute strength become more important than intelligence/ problem solving? But you are right, SK’s depiction of women left them out of leadership roles.
