I've actually not read a political fiction book before, although I've followed world news closely and shows like House of Cards, read about the politics behind Shakespeare, etc. Would love some recs on political thrillers that have a great writing style, and that give an insider's view of politics maybe, or of people entering a party.

I'm most familiar with American and European politics, so reading books set outside US+Europe would add a lot and would help me get a sense of ideologies other than capitalism. I suppose Nigerian authors like Wole Soyinka or South African authors are a few examples I've found, but books from Asia, Australia/NZ, Latin America, anywhere at all, would be great as well.

do you have a strong preference for the book to take place in the contemporary period, or would historical fiction and sf set in the future be acceptable?
