I want something like Norwegian Wood—a book set in Asia, specifically Japan, that follows a young male protagonist and a character-based story rather than focusing solely on the plot. It would also be nice to read novels that feel like the works of some of my favorite asian directors like Wong Kar Wai (Chungking Express, In the Mood For Love), Edward Yang (Yi Yi, A Brighter Summer Day), Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story, Late Spring), Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Tropical Malady, Blissfully Yours), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car, Evil Does Not Exist), and Hirokazu Koreeda (Nobody Knows, Shoplifters, Monsters). These films, I believe have a special asian quality in them that can never ever be replicated in western films and I seek for books that are the same way too, bonus points if they’re underated.
