I am looking for more Gothic literature to read. Of course I've read some of the other classic vampire books such as Dracula, Camilla, and Interview with the Vampire, all of which I've loved. I also loved Rebecca. What spooky Gothic lit should I add to my list next? I particularly would love to read some that capture some of the same alluring themes that the new Nosferatu movie did, because I want to ride that wave longer! I love the theme of womanhood being oppressed and therefore a woman's nature or desires are translated as monstrous and a sort of primal call to the darkness. Most vampire stories capture that symbolism (and I think Rebecca taps into it too), but it doesn't need to be a vampire story. However, I do NOT want to read cheap smutty dark fae/monster/etc romance – I know many of you here will agree that is not the same thing!! And although I think this is a deeply feminist theme I'm talking about, in my opinion it is a lot less reductive than a more overt story of a badass woman who doesn't want to wear a corset and marry a prince (that has its place as well but just not what I'm looking for!). Also open to important Gothic lit suggestions which don't quite align with this request but which I should read anyway!! TIA!
