Mourning and grief is a fascinating topic. Everyone loses people they love. Pets, friends, parents, siblings, family, lovers.

In modern times we have begun to see a very different and painful form of it, which is loved ones/friends falling to mental stagnation and anti intelectualism due to the internet, extremism and the misinformation age. This is a form of grief and loss very different from mourning a death, and is grim in other ways.

Is there any good stories about a protagonist who finds people they love/care for are turning into much less respectable people and turning to dark beliefs, to the degree the protagonist is conflicted by their love and their morals?

I am going through a painful moment in real life with my parents and the world, after a sheltered quiet life, and I want a book about this struggle that gives me another perspective on it. And makes me feel less alone.
