So I have three suggestion requests. The first: The Remains of the Day is a fantastic book, and this one felt like it could have been a real autobiography. I loved how subtle and skillfully it was written as well as how believable it was. Can anyone think of books that felt almost like they could have been real because they were so well-written?

Also, I love slice of life, Japanese fiction in particular. The only problem is I have exhausted my library’s selection in this category. Is there another reading genre that others would recommend in conjunction with slice of life?

Third, there is a true story made into a Disney movie called Night Crossing. There’s also a book by the same name. It’s about two families who build a hot air balloon to escape from East Germany in the 70’s. If it wasn’t true, it would be hard to believe. I absolutely love the movie and also liked the book. There’s another foreign film about it too. The question: are there any fiction books that have wild plot lines like this?

And of note: I don’t care for romance, SAs, or graphic scenes of abuse.

Keep going with Ishiguro- Artist of the Floating World should be your next book and continue with him from there.

I’m currently reading The Easy Life in Kamusari by Shion Miura, which is a lovely slice of life about a recent high school graduate who gets sent off to train in forestry. Sounds dull but it’s enchanting. You said you’ve pretty much exhausted the Japanese slice of life genre, but I thought I’d recommend it because it really is so lovely.

You might like Becky Chambers? Her stuff is scifi and does have plot threads but a lot of her writing is much more about the world the characters are in and how they interact with it. A Psalm for the Wild Built comes to mind, but honestly I imagine you’d like most of her writing. There are romance plots but I found the worlds she creates so interesting I didn’t care.

For slice of life fiction, I enjoy Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh series and 44 Scotland Street series, which feature interconnecting chapters with recurring characters. I loved Night Crossing as a kid too! and the Remains of the Day.
