Just read shogun and nothing compares

I've read plenty of books in the past but this is on another level. It's a book that got better on its second read which I've never had.

Suggest a book that's better than this of the same genre.

How are you defining “same genre” in this situation? Same genre – historical fiction? Same genre – Japense history?

* Of course, you could read the other Asian series by Clavell: Noble House, Tai-Pan, King Rat, Whirlwind, Gai-Jin.
* If it’s merely historical fiction, then Lonesome Dove books by Larry McMurtry are good.
* Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
* The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
