I’m hoping to get a book for my niece this Christmas. She is a great reader and im assuming at this age you’re reading short chapter books?

Anyways I’d love some book suggestions she might like.. I can’t remember most of my childhood and definitely don’t remember what I was reading at that age so all help is appreciated!

I do believe she has all the Junie B Jones already.

Anne of Green Gables – it holds up really well to a modern audience (the only racism is Marilla criticizing the work ethic of a small French boy)

The Menagerie series by Tui T Sutherland – a boy finds a secret zoo full of magical creatures and tries to help save it. It’s fun because the creatures talk, and it’s got great messages for people who are shy or have trouble making friends

    3. A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin – first of a series, it’s age appropriate but it’s also one of those series that holds something new when you revisit it as you get older

    4. Old school, but the American Girl books are still a HUGE hit with that age group. Just check the last page and remove any ads for dolls so she doesn’t get hooked.

Yes, they’re formulaic, but 9 year olds love formulaic. Plus you really can learn a ton of history from them. Almost certainly more than they’re getting in school.

Don’t underestimate your daughter’s ability/desire to read long, complex books. I was reading James Michener at 9yo. The Harry Potter series has several strong, female, main characters.

At that age I loved the “All of a Kind Family” books, “Baby Island”, “Histories Mysteries” books from American Girl, & Beverly Cleary books

The Circle of Magic books by Tamora Pierce. They were some of my best-beloved books around her age! Anything in general by Tamora Pierce; she is wonderful and writes many amazing female protagonists. Alanna will be perfect in another two or three years; Circle of Magic just about right to start at 9 or 10.
