I have not been able to connect with a lot of books that are often discussed when we talk about becoming better people. Like religious books I've read, books about life's meaning (e.g., Man's Search for Meaning), Buddhist self-help books, and others.

Strangely enough, I have sometimes found a stronger connection with fiction. An example is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Which at one point discusses the difference about God ordering people to rule over sin versus promising them that they will triumph over sin. But that the most accurate understanding is that they "may" rule over sin, which suggests there is a choice, that despite one's weakness and limitations we have a choice in life.

On the surface this may sound obvious to you. But that's what makes the book so good, the fact that the author makes you see human freedom and choice in a new way, as something amazing and worthy of reflection.

Now it might sound arrogant to say I've become a better person, that's for other people to judge. Yet, so many times when I feel weak and at the mercy of my circumstances, when I feel there is no hope to change anything, I'm reminded of the book's discussion. And I think maybe I can act differently. Maybe.

Are there books that similarly affected you or your life in a positive way?
