I'm looking for series suggestions like the Rose Legacy by Jessica Day George and Winterling by Sara Phineas (e.g., brave female protagonists featuring horses in a magical kingdom). Think for 8-12 years old. TIA 🙂
1. Tamora Pierce’s several series set in the kingdom of Tortall:
* Song of the lioness series. A girl pretends to be a boy in order to become a knight. She has magic, a beautiful horse and fights several enemies. She also gets her period and has romances.
* Immortals series. Another girl hires on as assistant to the horse expert of the Queen’s Riders. She can talk to animals and heal them. She helps fight Immortal beings.
* Protector of the Small series. It is now allowed for girls to become knights, but the first girl to enroll as a girl makes a lot of enemies. Fighting, and a wonderful horse called Peachblossom.
* Tbc. I haven’t read the other series yet.
These are YA, but I know that many read them earlier.
2. Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede: Princess runs away and joins a dragon instead of marrying a boring prince. Very funny. Cats and a Donkey instead of horses.

Not sure if it’s exactly what your looking in that it doesn’t heavily feature horses but:
The Cry of the Icemark – about the young queen of fantasy vikingland but instead of a horse she has a snow leopard.
The Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett – trainee witch and instead of a horse she has a troop of aggressive pixies.
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman – multiversal travel fantasy epic but instead of a horse it’s her spirit animal PLUS a heavily armoured polar bear.
