I need a book that feels like Black Sails. It doesn't have to be pirates or even necessarily historical. I just need unhinged queers fighting an oppressive empire and also mutually yearning. I also want it to be absolute heart-wrenching and with a dash of "doomed by the narrative". Googling Black Sails book recs just got me a list of nonfiction about pirates which is necessarily bad but it's not really what I was looking for.

tbh I haven’t seen Black Sails, but “unhinged queers fighting an oppressive empire and also mutually yearning” screams The Locked Tomb series to me (by Tamsyn Muir), if you’re cool with necromancy and memes. The first book (Gideon the Ninth) is more locked-room mystery but the next books expand out from there into the greater space empire
