I’m looking for series like red rising, or will of the many, specifically fantasy/ science fiction series. I’m trying to fill the void of waiting for books 😢😢

I specifically want series with defined world building that is different from realistic fiction of Earth (again like red rising or will of the many). It can definitely be adult, but I just want suggestions that appeal to a wider audience/ are more digestible. I’m looking for a story where i’m completely invested in the problem the protagonist faces- some books recently just haven’t hooked me like they should.

    1. I didn’t read the ones you mentioned but based off the rest of the description, I’d suggest:

Ender’s Game, maybe. It’s in space but has other worlds.

Terry Brooks Shannara series – you’ve got elves, dwarves, etc.

Brandon Sanderson has some good stuff.

The Wheel of Time series could work too

    2. Suddenlyfoxes on

Not a series, but Ursula K. LeGuin has numerous works that focus primarily on presenting worlds, and societies, unlike modern Earth’s. The Left Hand of Darkness and Five Ways to Forgiveness are both good places to start.

For series, Stephen King’s Dark Tower and Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time are both quite long and immersive (although perhaps each goes on a bit too long… still, they’re very much worthwhile). And a little older, but Roger Zelazny’s Amber and Chaos novels, starting with Nine Princes in Amber, are incredible.

For something lighter, try Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. According to Pratchett, Sourcery is the place to start, but I’d also suggest Guards! Guards!. There are several “lines” of novels that follow a set group of characters (the wizards, the witches, the guards, Death) and a few other stand-alones, so if you find one you like, just look up the others where those characters appear; the reading order ultimately isn’t all that important.
