I love the gentle, warm stories by Sarah Addison Allen but have read nearly everything she’s written in the magical realism genre. What would get close to her style? I love how the magical elements are just kind of organic in the stories, and I love the family dynamics.

I discovered Sarah Addison Allen through our local library’s Booksmack event – all of the librarians loved her work. She’s quite unique in that she doesn’t make a big deal about the magical elements but everyone seems to accept their existence.
Something close might be Isabelle Allende’s House of the Spirits or Laura Esquival’s Like Water for Chocolate, which both incorporate the kind of magical realism as found in One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Lots of family dynamics in these books!
Indians on Vacation by Thomas King has gentle magical realism in the story of a couple who go on vacation to Europe. It’s funny and touching and a really good read.
