I am an aspiring filmmaker. I need inspirations to make a short film. Could anyone please recommend me any books that I can adapt to make a low budget indie short film. I could be short story collection or small novels or anything else.

Novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. It’s also a great film too. Dunno what type of inspiration you need but that’s what came to my mind first.
I think the short story Fjord of Killary by Kevin Barry would make a great short film. The story appeared in the January 24, 2010 issue of The New Yorker. Or something similar.
“Sipsworth” by Simon Van Booy. Its print copy is 240 pages so it can almost be regarded as short story
“Joe Gould’s Secret” by Joseph Mitchell. Actually, J Mitchell has many “character profile” and short story publications that would make for great short films or stage productions. Some fiction, some nonfiction. Check out “Up in the Old Hotel” for a good many of his more notable works.
Recommend the audiobook for both of these, especially Up in the Old Hotel masterfully performed by Grover Gardner
