I’m a big fan of Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett. I’m reading The Evening and the Morning now, and whilst I’m enjoying it I am finding some of the writing a bit hammy and it’s slowly dawning on me that the core characters in one book are interchangeable with their counterparts in the others.
I’m looking for similar books, set in the early to high medieval era, with a similar sense of scale and grandeur. I’ve tried When Christ and His Saints Slept and it didn’t really grab me the same way. Any suggestions?
