Lately I’ve been thinking about my childhood love of Lloyd Alexander books. I read pretty much anything he wrote and I’m looking forward to reading them with my son when he’s a bit older.

All this nostalgia has me wishing I could have an adult version of a Lloyd Alexander book – light fantasy, new worlds, not overly complex, sweet but still with moral/introspective undertones. I enjoyed some of the love interest elements of his books, but don’t really gravitate toward the recent rise of sexy fantasy (e.g. ACOTAR). What might I enjoy in this vein?

Give Brandon Sanderson a go. I loved Prydain when I was a kid but avoided Sanderson because of hype and length, but his worlds are very complex and well thought out, and his characters are multidimensional but still not “grey” while also grappling with the underlying morality of their actions. His writing style is utilitarian and easy to follow, so the books went by much faster than I expected.
