I have been trying to look for romance books for my AP Literature class that will bring me on a roller coster of emotions. I love reading about historical events (especially Asian or European history) where characters have to go through hardships due to the time and place they were born and honestly want to read a book that allows me to cry my eyes out and make me go through many emotions. Please give me any recommendations!

In Memoriam by Alice Winn
*Gone with the Wind,* *A Farewell to Arms,* and *Wuthering Heights* are both pretty emotional stories with romantic plots at the center and they are all from before 1960.
Atonement
A Civil Contract by Georgette Heyer
Two in a Tower by Thomas Hardy
Um, pretty much anything by Jane Austen, and Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre
*Where the Lost Wander*, by Amy Harmon
Love story set on the Oregon Trail in 1853
Persuasion by Jane Austen and North and South, by Elizabeth Gaskell. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
The Paris Wife was great.
Somewhere in Time
Check out Amy Tan (The Joy Luck Club, The Hundred Secret Senses) or pretty much anything by Lisa See. Not much romance, but lots of hardship and heart-tugging.
Age of Innocence by Edith Warton.
Jessica by Bryce Courtenay. Based on a true story set in Australia during WWI. It will break your heart.
Katherine by Anya Seaton, Testament Of Youth by Vera Brittain, Mothering Sunday by Graham Swift.
