I really enjoyed the first few Cormoran Strike books but then it became apparent that the author is a raging transphobe and I cannot bring myself to read any more and give her my money.
What I loved about them was that they were involving mysteries with very character centric stories – I prefer low-key books. Not cost but not too gory, a bit of angst but not too much (I hate the disgraced/addicted/down on their luck detective). Good plots with real people. Almost a bit like golden age of mystery style books in a way.
Thanks for any recommendations!

Same. I also hate how the author just can’t leave well enough alone and has to ram her questionable (or should I say unquestioning and superficial centrist) politics down reader’s throats. If I were still in academia, this would merit a whole paper….
Anyway, for me what worked was Horowitz’ Magpie Murders and the subsequent books. And I kinda like Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series. But I especially love Candice Fox’ Crimson Lake series.
