I am looking for a fiction book but it will take place where the main character(s) join the military so a lot of the story will have to do with their first days, basic training, and all that. Any branch of the military. I truly no nothing about the military and would like a fictional story but with a somewhat realistic presentation of the first days of an enlisted person. Thanks!
ps – I am not interested in joining the military, I'm just curious. It seems like such a mysterious process.

Are you looking for modern (as in the last ten years) setting or historical? If so, a memoir might serve to give you a more realistic view as most fiction takes place at a higher level than basic training.
This list from the West Point librarians might give you a better idea of what’s out there.

Catch 22
The process the world over is and has been to take individuals and turn them into members of cohesive units that will obey orders. Start with breaking down individuality: uniforms, haircuts, barracks, dining hall…rules for everything and group punishments…
