Mishima. His Sea of Fertility tetralogy is a must read, but I also recommend *The Sailor Who Fail From Grace With the Sea*.

Kawabata! *Snow Country* and *Thousand Cranes* are my personal favorites, both of which are shorter reads.

Kobo Abe was sort of the Kafka of Japanese writers. *Woman in the Dunes* is his best known work. I also liked *The Ruined Map* quite a bit.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s *Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories*.

      Junichiro Tanizaki’s *Seven Japanese Tales*.

    2. You might like Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman. I’ve also heard good things about Earthlings, although I haven’t read it myself.

Also, if you like mysteries at all, I’d say Keigo Higashino is worth checking out. He’s got a couple of series that are being translated currently. They’re a little longer than 150-200 pages, but maybe the mystery elements would help.

    3. – Yoko Ogawa – The Housekeeper and the Professor

      – Sayaka Murata – Convenience Store Woman

      – Natsume Soseki – The Gate

      – Kikuko Tsumura – There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job

      – Emi Yagi – Diary of a Void

I don’t have an answer, but I was about to ask the same question. I will follow this thread with great interest.

    6. Kotaro Isaka? Remote control, 3 assassins and bullet train and he’s got some great short stories

Haruki Murakami. I’ve read many of his books and have enjoyed all of them, particularly Kafka on the shore and 1Q84. I’m currently reading Sputnik sweetheart and enjoying it immensely.
