I'm afraid I Am Legend disappointed me… 😓 I know I won't share the same opinion as others, maybe I will, but it felt very slow. I would have liked it more if Richard Matheson didn't shy away from describing the disturbing sequences. There were parts were he describes the MC going house to house, murdering vampires with wooden stakes but all mentions of violence is intentionally avoided. There are attempts at making it disturbing like when he describes how the MC drags the vampires through houses and over steps, banging their heads on stuff and watching them burn in the sunlight. Even me just typing that sentence felt more menacing and violent than the book felt though. 😬
Its readability felt very off to me, which is one of the most important qualities in a book. I couldn't go more than a few sentences before getting lost and having to backtrack. 😵💫 Granted, this might be due to my brain not being normal, but it was very frustrating and took me out of the immersion often.
As an example of how to write good readable text, the book I'm currently reading, My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier, has amazing readability. I can flow through the pages effortlessly without having to wonder if I'm still keeping track of what's going on. I am not directly comparing the two, I'm just stating the difference in readability alone.
I understand that it may have something to do with its age, it was written in 1954, literally over 70 years ago. 🤕 In fact, that's probably the sole reason. An entirely different time period with very different people, minds, beliefs and cultures.
If you like a slower burn with very intelligent writing, to the point where you are wondering if you're now questioning life itself with scientific and poetic opinions , then you will feel right at home.
Nonetheless, I was hoping to enjoy the book more than I did. I loved the movie as a kid, I expected the book to at least meet those feelings but I was wrong and it kinda sucks. My Fiancé told me that its a bad idea to have watched a movie before reading the book, she's probably right, like usual. 🫠 It is what it is though, I'm really loving My Sister Rosa and I will probably do a video on it.
My final verdict is:
(DNF amount) of Zombie Vampires Sleeping in a Freezer
🧊🧟♂️🧊 out of 10
Please tell me what made you thought about I Am Legend. Have you read My Sister Rosa? If so… 🤐 no spoilers please.
I am going to do reviews of books I've read (or in this case, tried to) recently as a way to connect with other people. If you would like to see more, but in video format, follow me and I'll be putting one together once I finish My Sister Rosa! 😁
