I was looking for a book on Liberia, but the few I've found seem to be old white men telling the story. I don't mind old white men when reading European history. I've noticed a trend of ugly rhetoric from a lot of the best pop history writers – but I'm familiar enough with the history that I can move past the lurid descriptions of rape or batshit insane historical assertions.
But reading books on Africa, it seems important to get an African voice or at least a poc who has the experience that me, as a white person, can only digest or understand through reading poc.
Only one I've found is 'An African History of Africa" which looks great.
I was wondering if there was anything more specific to Liberia?
Or if you recommend that book?
Or recommend something else on Africa for an entirely ignorant person!
I feel weird writing that. Like if someone asked for a book on Europe I'd be like…. which part or what time?
As a follow up, why is there so little western-available media regarding the south of the continent when it's so easy to find [western] books on other parts of the world.
Thanks in advance!
